The General Education Review and Inquiry (GERI) process launched in spring 2017. The Expanding and Enhancing the Learning Environment cluster chairs, Jennifer Karas and Danny McIntosh, worked with the academic units, Faculty Senate and Campus Life & Inclusive Excellence to create this committee.  They invited all deans to nominate potential members, and self-nominations were also solicited.

The GERI purpose, rooted doubly in DU IMPACT 2025 and in the desirability to critically evaluate general education periodically, is to conduct an inquiry into the philosophy, goals, delivery, and outcomes of the DU common curriculum, doing so in relation to other possibilities or opportunities. The group is charged with answering the question, “What should general education at DU look like in the next few years?”  The process may yield anything from a reaffirmation of the existing program as it is, to modifications of the program, to significant changes.

To date, the inquiry process has involved over 200 faculty and 500 students. In addition, the committee reviewed the professional literature on general education, studied programs at 20 peer and exemplar institutions, and reflected on the DU mission, vision, undergraduate learning outcomes and DU IMPACT 2025. In addition, 181 faculty responded to a faculty survey in November 2017. Fall 2018 featured structural planning in conversation with Faculty Senate, resulting in a “backbone” process and a wide consultation process for the Design Phase.
